Discovering Essential Oils

Couple of months ago, I attended a Breast Cancer benefit and won a basket full of Young Living Essential Oils. At the time, I did not know very much about essential oils and their amazing benefits. I later became a Young Living Oil distributor and I’m in love!!!

Essential Oils have been used and recorded since the early Egyptian times. The Bible also references them one hundred and eighty eight different times. Young Living essential oils are distilled from plants located all over the world. The plants must be grown organically to maximize their therapeutic quality. Essential Oils are known to be anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-oxidant, and immune supporting. The oils are also used as a mood booster, relaxant, and emotional support. Each essential oil contains molecules, which offers benefits of promoting good health. The oils can be applied directly to the skin (the bottom of the feet is a great location as it Foot Chartcontains reflex points that correspond to specific energy zones and organs of the body), ingested, diffused into the air, and inhaled. When the oils are applied to the skin, it is easily absorbed and the bloodstream carries it to every cell in the body. To obtain the oils, the plants are distilled in large stainless steel cylinders. They then steam the plants from the bottom of the cylinder. The steam picks up the oil sacs from the plants and takes them to the top of the distiller. The steam is cooled down to water so the oil is able to float to the top to be removed. The process of distilling the oils takes a lot of materials. A single drop of peppermint oil is equal to twenty-eight cups of peppermint tea. Five thousand pounds of rose petals are needed to distill one pound of pure rose oil. YIKES! That’s a lot of rose petals. This also explains why some oils are more expensive than others.

Here are some ways that I’ve incorporated oils into my everyday life:

-Diffusing. The other day I had peppermint oil diffusing in the living room as Logan (my three year old son) had a stuffy nose.

Laundry Detergent_edit-Laundry Detergent. I’ve started making my own laundry detergent using the Young Living Essential Oils. What a great money saver and I don’t have to worry about the ingredients since I make them from scratch.

-Dishwasher Detergent. Yes, I’ve started to make my own dish detergent! The dishes come out clean and fresh.

-Personal Hygiene. I’ve made my own deodorant using Young Living Essential Oils. I don’t know about you but I can’t stand the all-natural deodorants out there. Lets face it…they don’t work! Lately, I’ve been using a brand that contains aluminum. Even though it does its job, I can’t have my body absorbing this harmful metal. Not cool for my health. I’m extremely excited to have found a “natural” deodorant that WORKS! I’ve even got my Mom (who has been a user of aluminum filled deodorant for years) using my homemade deodorant.

-Ingesting. I love adding a drop of Lemon Essential Oil to hummus or salsa. Likewise, when you ingest the oils, it adds the extra benefits your body needs. I also have been adding a drop of Peppermint to my water bottle to have as little pick me up during my workouts.Dishwasher Detergent_edit

-Sleep. For the past two nights, I have not needed to take melatonin. Right before bed, I’ve been adding a drop of Lavender Oil to my pillow and rubbing Peace and Calming on my wrists. Its been working like a charm. I’ve been getting a GREAT night sleep and have been waking up feeling refreshed.

-Topically. Yesterday, when Logan had his fever, I used peppermint mixed with coconut oil to rub on his back to offer a cool relief from his fever. I also have been rubbing it on his chest (think “all-natural” Vicks Vapor Rub but without any other additives) to clear his stuffy nose.

These are just a few ways I’ve been incorporating Young Living Essential Oils into my everyday life. Oh…and there is no need to worry about overdosing on oils. So OIL AWAY! Be sure to check back for future posts as I elaborate on the uses. I’ll be sharing some amazing recipes to make the products I listed above.
